Here's a video podcast interview I did for Other Record Labels! The interview is 50 minutes covering a range of topics - click the play button to check it out or if you're strapped for time, there's always the 'Watch Later' button once you hit YouTube. I'm thrilled to share this interview I did with Scott Orr, who runs a podcast series and a support resource for record labels called Other Record Labels!
This summer I stumbled across Scott's podcasts after watching a podcast he did with Inner Ocean, then some older ones with the likes of Taylor Deupree at 12k and Warp Records. I was hooked not just by the labels and artists whom I admire, but also Scott's laidback and supportive style. I dived into all the resources he's built for record labels (advice that is useful for artists too!) and bought his book on marketing too. One of the things I checked out was a free template resource and after grabbing that, Scott reached out and after an exchange or two, he invited me for a chat on his new season of podcasts!
You can check it out by clicking play above, or visit the link on the Other Record Labels website HERE, or if you prefer to listen to your podcasts on Spotify, see below.
In this podcast, Scott kicked off by chatting about the CD format, why I've stuck by this format through a time when the younger generation deemed it less fashionable, and what I think to its resurgence among that same generation. We talked about vinyl a little including why the label is inspired by the label, the different vinyl-effect formats here at Whitelabrecs, and also, the fact that I've finally taken the plunge to order my first Whitelabrecs vinyl release - out in November. There's lots of insight in there on how I work with artists, some of the challenges a record label might face today and much more.
PS - Don't be put off by the grumpy face in my photo - I lighten up a lot in this podcast!
PPS - Scott also runs his own record label called Other Songs, and has some music of his own coming out soon. He's from a graphic design background and it really shows in his packaging design! His music is awesome too - below is a little Bandcamp player if you wanted to give it a listen...
