Isla's Quiet Burrow Radio Show

Quiet Burrow 002

June 30, 20254 min read

Back by popular demand, this week's blog post sees the return of my daughter Isla, who presents the second episode of her radio show called The Quiet Burrow. This is a quarterly show featuring Ambient music and chat as Isla (aged 6) who covers a range of topics from the environment, nature, art and probably (knowing Isla) a whole lot more. The header image for this show was shot at the weekend, when we visited the beach and stayed until very late.

Isla often takes an interest in my work with Whitelabrecs and is very much interested in music, happy to listen to whatever I put on in the car. She says that someday, helping me with Whitelabrecs will be one of her seven jobs when she grows up!

This latest show was created in a similar way to the first, as five Ambient tracks were selected and recorded to tape. The tape player had an impact on the music in this show, with an unintended wow and flutter effect being added. I record tracks from CDs using a new We Are Rewind tape player and recorder and then I transfer the recording onto my laptop using an old USB deck. I think it's the USB deck which may be the culprit and will look at resolving this for the next one. For now though, it all adds to the LoFi sleepy feel of Isla's show so we decided to keep the effect rather than re-record.

To listen to the show, hit play below and if you like what you hear there's a tracklist, followed by a little information about Quiet Burrow and some of the topics covered...

ABOUT QUIET BURROW

Harry: What is Quiet Burrow?

Isla: It's a radio show about Ambient music and I also like to chat about the songs, art and nature and I might use the show to do a few different creative things.

Harry: Why is it called Quiet Burrow?

Isla: Bunnies are my favourite animals and they live in burrows. Ambient music is quiet and so this is why we called it the Quiet Burrow.

Quiet Burrow 1

Harry: How did we make Quiet Burrow?

Isla: Daddy bought me an orange tape machine and a pink tape. When Daddy plays Ambient songs in the car that I like, we add it to the list. We recorded these songs from the CD onto the tape.

You can find out more about these portable, bluetooth cassette players via the We Are Rewind website and they're also stocked by various HiFi shops across the world.

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Quiet Burrow Environment

Protecting The Environment

Isla is passionate about the planet and wants to make a difference by protecting the environment. She gets upset when she sees litter and we'll often pick it up and dispose of it when we're out and about. In this episode Isla shares some tips on how we can all do some simple things to protect the planet such as recycling, reducing use, re-using water bottles, taking care of nature, restricting electricity use and of course, picking up litter.

Perhaps there's an idea for a future project we could get involved in sometime; a litter picking session!

Quiet Burrow Bunny

Bunnies

Isla has been bunny mad, ever since we got her a small grey toy Jellycat bunny before she was born. She's been inseparable from it and can't sleep without him. So this is where the name for this show came from, as Isla tells us above.

All of the cover images for Quiet Burrow shows will feature a bunny and in both of the first two episodes, Isla was sent a photo from photographer Bob Burnett. Bob responded to a call for bunny-based imagery in the Inner Echo.

You can check out more of Bob's photography on his website HERE.

Quiet Burrow Cambridge

Cambridge

In this episode, we selected 'Blooming In Sturton' by Miguel Otero. Miguel lived in Cambridge for a while and dedicated his album 'Brief Tales' to this fascinating, historic city. The cover artwork is a beautiful depiction of what could be Jesus Green and captures the spirit of warm days spent in Cambridge.

This track is a favourite of Isla's and she listens to it most nights as part of the Calm Cloud playlist I made for her. We often visit Cambridge and Isla shares some memories in this show. Here's a photo I took when we went punting on the river Cam.
