Home Diaries 019: Mehrdad Kanani

We’ve taken a pause from our schedule of CD albums due to our local post office closing, following the outbreak of Covid19. We launched a digital series called Home Diaries, in which we’ll release EPs and albums by an international line-up of artists, with the music created during lockdown and social distancing conditions.

The series reflects a range of sounds, styles and ideas, as each artist portrays their own reflections uniquely. Each release is digital only for now, as we hope to raise what we can to help keep our label ticking over at this time. The releases feature a recurring polaroid image of a small lonely house, with a coloured filter chosen by the artist for each respective release.

Our 19th Home Diaries edition is by Mehrdad Kanani an artist and photographer from Tehran, Iran. This is Mehrad’s debut and is a collection of three pieces coined from his time in quarantine, in which he lived alone. This mini album channels frustrations of cancelled travel plans and the loneliness of living along, unable to go outside to meet friends. During the process and with time to think and create, he struck upon a wave of positivity which he has channelled into the noise and fuzz of these Ambient soundscapes.

We have an exciting line-up to follow and each release will include bonus PDF liner notes, which has an interview with the artist on how they made the album, what their situation is like, what they have planned, their influences and what equipment/techniques they used.  There are also additional photos provided by the artist as part of the PDF too. press release
“Home Diaries is an invitation to artists and musicians to create an album or EP to document their personal experience during the lockdown or social distancing conditions that are upon us, due to the coronavirus outbreak. We interview each artist and this is included as a bonus PDF with the download. You can also check out the Home Diaries series on Spotify if you prefer, which will be available to stream in due course.

Mehrdad Kanani is a photographer and sound designer based in Tehran, Iran. He got in touch after learning of our Home Diaries project, as he had been writing some material based on the sounds inside his head. These were on his mind as he wrestled with the idea of quarantine and self isolation. Living alone, he initially felt suppressed, especially after travel plans had been cancelled but throughout the process and through his work on the sound content of his Home Diaries, Mehrdad adopted a positive approach. Amidst the murk and fuzziness of the opening track ‘A Dreamless Sleep’, a half-tuned radio broadcast beams out waves of positivity, which ultimately shifts aside for another quiet pause. This gentle smearing of noise, hum and fractals somehow lends itself perfectly to the dreamy melodies that blur in and out. The jittering thoughts of a solitary soul that flit about, like positive and negative electricity charges, have been sonically transcribed for you, the listener.

Out Now! Tsone – Purification Verses

We’re pleased to welcome back Tsone to Whitelabrecs, who released WLR number seven last year, a beautiful record long since sold-out. His new album is a set of five-minute-exact drones that will lull the mind with its delicate looping texture. For those unfamiliar, Tsone is Arizona, US based artist Tony Obr who’s released with labels such as Audiotalaia and Home Normal, with Ian Hawgood from the latter being responsible for mastering this one. Purification Verses should appeal to those who enjoy work by Marcus FischerRichard Ginns or Federico Durand – you can listen to a preview of the album by using the Soundcloud player below or keep a check on our Facebook or Instagram pages to preview the packaging when we share it.

This went to out to our mailing list last weekend and at time of writing, we’ve just got fifteen copies left! To find out, you can click the link below or on the image above to listen. To avoid missing out on future releases, you can join our mailing list HERE

press release
“Tsone is Phoenix, Arizona artist Tony Obr, who returns to Whitelabrecs having released ‘Dovetail’ with us back in May 2016. Over the last ten years he’s also released work with the likes of Home Normal, txt Recordings and Audiotalaia. Tony’s background includes playing woodwind in school bands as well as Jazz ensembles but particularly over the last decade his focus has been in making electronic music. He teaches electronic music and regularly puts into practice his visual arts background too and this all adds to his creative focus.

Purification Verses is a record that has been complete for quite some time and has been mastered by Home Normal label owner Ian Hawgood. It’s a record where Tony set himself the rule of using only two production tools: A cheap children’s keyboard synthesizer and a looping patch constructed with Max/MSP. He also limited post-processing on the sound to keep a consistency throughout. Tony would usually use a large pool of tools including hardware synthesizers, samplers, effects pedals and custom built software instruments. However, for Purification Verses, he focuses on a more singular approach by limiting the tools at his disposal. He wanted to investigate all of the possibilities available to him through this stripped-down and limited choice of tools.

The result of the investigation yielded a series of songs with an inherent unity and cohesion that runs between them. This unity is most apparent in the formal organisation of each song, namely, two looping patterns played against each other for exactly 5 minutes.
Tony drew upon his visual arts background for influence as the methods used to compose these pieces are similar to how one might construct a series of paintings of formally similar variations on a theme.”

Out Now! The Prairie Lines – Eyes Down Slowdown

Out now on Whitelabrecs, we’re pleased to announce the debut release by The Prairie Lines which is the new outlet for Bill Bawden, formerly known as Herzog. We’ve long been a follower of Bill’s work through his self-released/netlabel work as Herzog so we’re pleased to present this beautiful set of wintry Ambient/piano pieces. Eyes Down Slowdown features the familiarly beautiful artwork of Slovakian photographer Peter Nejedly and might be a record for those who enjoy work by Scissors and SellotapeHerzog (of course!) or Andrew Hargreaves. You can stream or purchase the album by clicking the player above.

This went to out to our mailing list last weekend and at time of writing, we’ve just got one copy left! To find out, you can click the link below or on the image above to listen. To avoid missing out on future releases, you can join our mailing list HERE

press release
“South Londoner Bill Bawden has been releasing delicate ambient music since 2005 under various guises, most notably albums and EPs on Serein, 12Rec, Resting Bell, Audio Gourmet and Rural Colours under the name Herzog. On his first full-length release under his Prairie Lines moniker, Bill has continued to refine his sound, processing piano samples to bring out warm lo-fi textures and layers of static.
The prairie lines are wide open spaces and homely values. Pylons and cables stretching for miles. Lines of migration. Interrupted communications.

eyes down slowdown is a call to become more introspective, to temporarily reject the speed of life around you.
An invitation to a place of worship, stepping into a resonant holy chamber.. this is where we kneel. A secret home away from the buzzing city streets, but also a secret home inside yourself. The performance of a repetitive ritual in order to achieve some result. A bright melodic loop which gradually corrodes. A familiar sequence that gradually falls apart, an examination of what is necessary. A repetition to bring about
a trance-like state.. to see without seeing and hear without hearing. To touch hands from the sky.
A calm landing.., to descend to somewhere new… an open field and a gentle breeze.
To accept the familiar and unfamiliar as one, to be comfortable with life whatever it holds.
Stop haunting my door.. not a physical door but a way in. The ghost is not trying to gain access but preventing you or anyone close to you from gaining access. Smile but prepare. When you look inside yourself, what if you don’t like what you see, or it scares you?

Out Now! Overshift – Of Light and Shade

Out now on Whitelabrecs, we welcome a textured Ambient/minimal electronic producer from the United States, named Overshift who has appeared on labels such as Psicodelica, Yoruba Grooves and Galanding. Of Light and Shade is an immersive listen full of detail, intended for either conscious, or subconscious listening in line with Brian Eno’s original concept of Ambient music. Those who enjoy Krill.Minima, Robert Henke or Echospace might enjoy this record – you can stream or purchase the album by clicking the player above.
Of Light and Shade is also available in our usually limited run of 50 copies to the world, housed in vinyl imitation CDr packaging.

This went to out to our mailing list last weekend and at time of writing, we’ve got copies still available – to find out more or grab a copy, you can click the link below or on the image above to listen. To avoid missing out on future releases, you can join our mailing list HERE

https://whitelabrecs.bandcamp.com/album/of-light-and-shade

press release
“Overshift is an Electronic Sound artist from New Jersey, USA who has released through several labels including Psicodelica, Yoruba Grooves, Galanding and Listen:React. At an early age, he became fascinated with DJing and learnt to mix on belt-driven turntables. Production was then the natural evolution as he began recording just after the millennium. After a ten year hiatus to focus on his career, the creative urge returned in 2013, as he assembled a small studio after time spent researching different room modes and installing proper acoustic treatment. This studio has been expanded and adapted as his collection of hardware and software has developed.

Overshift’s approach to music production is steeped in a ‘less is more’ approach as layered Ambient environments and textured Minimal Techno have become his signature. Initially, he will work on something new with a certain feeling or story in mind. This is usually something which correlates to an intellectual concept and can be inspired by almost anything. The process is usually a matter of just experimenting with sounds until it aligns with the concept that he intends to convey. Subtle background textures are carved from tape and vinyl noise. Random modular sequences and patches are prepared to compose a general melody and in some cases, percussive and rhythmic elements are developed. Once the basic building blocks are in place, slight variations are applied over a four to eight bar loop. From here, dozens and dozens of layers can be added from items such as field recordings, old vinyl records, textures, rhythms, but it is also not uncommon for there to be considerably less. All the while, a crucial element to the Overshift sound is the juxtaposed concept of controlled randomness: once a general arrangement is in place, multiple takes are patched randomly with generated sequences and modulation. Further micro-edits are developed from each take, using the bits that work, and deleting those which don’t.

Overshift straddles the lines between Ambient music and Minimal Techno striving to overlap these genres. For Whitelabrecs and in his album ‘Of Light and Shade’ he focuses more towards the Ambient aspect as marginal movements of innumerable sound sources combine to form what is ultimately a truly immersive listening experience, built from almost nothing. He aimed to flesh out a sonic duality and as a result, Of Light and Shade is an experience that could either be listened to intently, or simply heard.”

Coming soon…La Petite Vague | Remous

We’ve still got another couple of releases lined up before 2016 is out. Next is an album by Italian artists La Petite Vague who have previously released an EP with our sister netlabel Audio Gourmet. Their debut album ‘Remous‘ sees Nicola Fornasari and Diego Balconi mix and arrange hours worth of material into 7 murky tracks, themed around water, the ocean and backwater. Their sound straddles the lines between ambient, drone, electro-acoustic, dark ambient and light noise – this one may appeal to those who enjoy Ben Fleury-Steiner, Marcus Fischer or Marsen Jules. The striking artwork was provided by Cesare Camardo. You can listen to a preview of the album by using the Soundcloud player below or keep a check on our Facebook page to preview the packaging when we share it.

press release
“La Petite Vague are recording artists Nicola Fornasari and Diego Balconi who are lifelong friends originally from Cremona, Italy. Nicola also records as Xu and Xu(e) and has seen material surface on labels such as Eilean, Cathedral Transmissions and Thirsty Leaves Music. To date, the duo have just one record out as La Petite Vague: ‘Treize’ which is a free 15 minute netlabel EP on Audio Gourmet, released back in 2014.
Nicola began his work with sound back in 1995 in a hardcore band called Entropia, playing in more than 100 gigs around Europe. Due to a busy professional life, Diego struggles to find time to devote completely to a musical project however he has spent many years managing and co-operating with stage sets and sound engineering at local events. Diego also builds electronics and piezo-amplified noise makers and it’s from here that he began working with Nicola on La Petite Vague in 2012.

La Petite Vague are completely devoted to improvisation and they set out their performance with no plan, as they loop various sounds and objects into hours of material. The best moments are selected and mixed down through processing techniques, layering and EQ.
In ‘Remous’ they have created a uliginous atmosphere through seven tracks that incorporate elements of toy psaltery, guitar, melodica, Tibetan bowls, rammerdrum, tuning forks, synth and other objects, fed through various live loopers and effects. The work opens with the longest piece, ‘Vague #9’ which takes its time to set the scene, before the album delves through six shorter pieces that traverse murky, detailed environments. Remous is a humble and personal celebration of the water element, particularly the sea or the ocean and this is depicted by Cesare Camardo’s artwork which is entitled Mo’ In A Mountain Getaway, a dedication to Werner Herzog.”

Coming soon…Philippe Lamy | Inner Stretch

Recently we shared a preview of our next release which is by French sound artist Philippe Lamy. With a subtly glitch and noise drenched record called, ‘Inner Stretch‘ is out today. Philippe has released on labels such as Dronarivm, Mystery Sea and Audio Gourmet and he has collaborated with artists such as Pleq and Darius Ciuta. His sound is unique but it will likely appeal to anyone who enjoys Entia Non, Janek Schaefer or Eliane Radigue. The stunning artwork was provided by Federica Jeanne De Luca. You can listen to a preview of the album by using the Soundcloud player below or keep a check on our Facebook page to preview the packaging when we share it.

We released the album to our mailing-list subscribers last weekend and many copies have sold already. At time of writing there are some left – to find out more or to secure your copy, you can click the link below or on the image above to listen. To avoid missing out on future releases, you can join our mailing list HERE

press release
“Philippe Lamy is a Toulouse, France based sound artist and painter originally from Casablanca, Morocco. He began recording in 2005 and has since had material release through labels such as Dronarivm, Wist Records and Taalem as well as netlabel work through the likes of Audio Gourmet and Nowacki. He has also collaborated with artists such as Pleq, Darius Ciuta and Philippe Neau.

Philippe’s approach to sound is unmistakable: he uses a wealth of different sound textures and techniques to build layers of environmental sound. Field recordings, software instruments and voices are processed, layered, processed and then layered again to create a collage not dissimilar to the approach he takes with painting. Philippe views sound recordings as materials and sets about building and transforming them into new objects of living matter.

The resulting sound environment you’ll hear in ‘Inner Stretch’ is clearly minimal, yet beneath the strong, deep and curious sounds lies a great complexity through many ‘coats’. The tracks do not hang suspended as a particular sound is stretched and repeated. Instead, Philippe has created something with great variety and unpredictability, decorated with many strokes of sonic material. One moment you may only be able to detect a few pops and rumbles of bass frequencies but before long, a deep drone will creep into view, if only for a brief period of time. Philippe approaches his work with sound just as he would with paint: rules and random, strength and lightness, layers and layers, light and silence, destruction and creation, always trying, again and again.”

press release
“José Soberanes is a sound artist from the small town of Tula de Allende, Hidalgo, Mexico. Through his various projects, his work has appeared on labels such as Twice Removed, Impulsive Habitat, Éter Lab, Found Toys Creative and Mexican labels We Only Share (WOS) and Abolipop/Suplex.
José began working with sound around 4 years ago but has been rooted in music since his childhood with diverse influences including IDM, minimalism, micro sound, modern classical, experimental ambient, sound art, death metal and jazz.

His approach to producing Ambient/Drone music begins with small trips around his neighbourhood, taking in the sounds and moments that occur before taking this inspiration back to his studio.
In The Rising Tide, José strived to create something that would reflect his feelings of loss, anxiety and hope during what was a difficult time. These three elements form the basis of a thoroughly immersive sound environment spanning around 45 minutes with glimmers of hope flickering in and out of a wall of despair. Various sound sources were used within the 6 tracks, including acoustic and electric guitar, analogue synthesizer, static, analogue effects pedals, tape loops, field recordings and found sound.

The Rising Tide is an album that is designed to challenge the listener to rise above life’s turmoil, to take a chance and to make the best of every situation.”
