Next on Whitelabrecs, we’re set to increase the run count to 100 copies for the second time in our history, as we welcome brothers Harry and Stuart Towell to our catalog, as Paper Relics. Their last release emerged some 7 years ago on Time Released Sound, a set of lo-fi rustic folk/blues recordings. This time round, they’ve spent more time honing their craft, along with help from Sven Laux in a record that charts their personal progress since their debut album.

This one draws in many sub-genres from Post Rock, Shoegaze and Ambient to Neo Classical, Blues and some Folk and it may perhaps appeal to those who enjoy Mute Forest, Gentleman Losers or The Frozen Vaults. It will be made available in the Whitelabrecs store in two different versions – our classic white label vinyl-effect style CDrs as well as a deluxe printed version which imitates a gatefold vinyl LP.

“Paper Relics are brothers Harry and Stuart Towell who reside 16.1 miles apart. Their debut album was released back in the summer of 2011 on American imprint Time Released Sound, entitled ‘Over Exposure’. This was a record steeped in the past as they used lo-fi blues and folk guitar Ambience to reflect over childhood memories spent on a farm on which their grandparents live. The farm was set to become a housing development so the memories became all the more cherished through the recordings and accompanying artwork.

Now nearly 7 years on, the brothers’ follow-up record ‘The Road Home’ traces the journey from that very point of reflecting on childhood memories as young adults circa 2010/11, to now. The title might read to some as a return home, a struggle back to a family abode however, this record deals with the trials, triumphs and time in between, having both set out to forge their own paths to become homeowners with their respective wives. When they began recording, the brothers lived in the same home with their parents, each with a new relationship and a stuttering career. Yet whilst The Road Home tells the story of the last 7 years reflecting on what is now already history – it is an album firmly about the present as they enjoy the foundation for their futures, clinging onto what they’ve worked hard to achieve. The lyrics in ‘Timeframing’ are about freezing these moments and the dozens of clocks you can hear ticking at the beginning can also be heard in ‘Tinted by Time’ on Over Exposure. Harry revisited the same antique shop where these were originally captured to see if they were still there and was able to re-record them once more. This recording plays briefly as the track opens to focus your thoughts on time once more.

Opening track ‘Stoke’s Hall’ was something Stuart penned and recorded the night before Harry’s wedding and the title reflects the name of the venue. Likewise, Wyke’s Retreat harks back to Stuart’s wedding from the summer of 2017. Over Exposure was creaking with rustic charm, whereas The Road Home sees a more structured approach to production. There is more variety, as some pieces drone gloriously in an elegant daze, others are more alive as the subtle power of Stuart’s guitar takes centre stage. Then this time around Harry has provided vocals in ‘Timeframing’ and ‘Frost’ as well as building a couple of tracks that use drumloops and percussion, recalling some of his downtempo work as Spheruleus. To give one final twist to the presentation, Harry and Stuart enlisted the assistance of Berlin artist Sven Laux, who provided additional orchestration and sound mixing.

Paper Relics albums are never likely to be released on a regular basis due to the busy lifestyles the brothers lead, so we felt our usual run of 50 copies wouldn’t be enough to do this album justice. So The Road Home is available in two runs of 50 copies; our familiar ‘white label vinyl-effect CDr’ as well as a special printed CDr edition that looks just like a mini gatefold LP.”

Introducing: Paper Relics

We tend to keep news of emerging releases on Whitelabrecs a secret until 1-2 weeks before it goes live. However, we’ve got some news that’s burning a hole in our pocket… the return of Paper Relics, a project featuring brothers Harry and Stuart Towell. They released their debut album ‘Over Exposure‘ on American label Time Released Sound some 7 years ago and it’s apt that they return to their homeland in their follow-up, on Harry’s own Whitelabrecs.

Although it must be said, their new work has evolved somewhat as their recording methods and techniques have developed over the years. There are many exciting details, including two versions, a special guest and an increased run of copies but for now, we just wanted to get the announcement out there! And what better time to do so than on Stuart’s birthday?

Floor Overhead is a project by Andrew Farwell and Uses For Pavement is his debut album after a couple of self-released works. “Floor Overhead is Brooklyn, USA based artist Andrew Farwell who some may recognise from our recent compilation album ‘Whitelabsounds’. His previous output has seen a few self-released projects on Bandcamp and we’re now pleased to be able to present the debut album ‘Uses For Pavement’

Andrew has been playing guitar since the age of 12 and eventually migrated to making electronic and ambient music on computers some years later. His current approach to sound uses guitar recordings deconstructed and processed with inspiration drawn from industry heavyweights such as Steve Reich, Kevin Drumm, William Basinski and Fennesz.

Uses For Pavement is the product of quiet, happy accidents from guitar recordings that have been gently brushed over with some production to create a collage focused on spacing and permanence.
The album is an attempt to refuse the temptation to alter accident-prone inputs and superimpose the ‘shoulds’ of creation. Like thoughts, inputs are inherently unchangeable while our reaction to those inputs is negotiable. The result of this album is a heavy but structure-less space that serves as a shelter for otherwise lost ideas.”

“Covarino/Incorvaia are musicians Francesco Covarino (drums) and Alessandro Incorvaia (guitar), originally from Perugia in central Italy. Their debut release emerged last year on UK imprint Preserved Sound and was named after the artists’ hometown.
Both artists currently reside in countries further afield now with Alessandro based in London, UK and Francesco in Granada, Spain. So their follow-up album is named after the latter as they focused on a live and more improvised set as a duo, without the additional musicians included in ‘Perugia’.

Both artists grew up together and were in a band in the late nineties before it disbanded. It wasn’t until 2015 until Francesco and Alessandro re-united to work together musically as they set about recording over several sessions during the Christmas holidays. Their musical influences of Post Rock, Indie, Free Jazz and Ambient collide and spiral fluidly into the material that can be heard within ‘Granada’.
Over the course of six unedited live tracks, percussion and warm guitar meld together beautifully in one afternoon session, best enjoyed in daylight when there is at least a glimmer of sunshine. The cover artwork was fittingly taken in Granada, of a Prickly Pear Cactus plant on a clear-sky day.

The album is simply named after the location it was recorded and since it was spontaneous, the tracks do not have specific titles as the artists wish to leave the album as free from a concept as possible. It was felt that to add some fabric or stories to their work post-production would devalue the fact that this record was made off the cuff.”

We’ve had an uncharacteristic break these last few weeks but behind the scenes we’ve been working on future material in the Whitelabrecs catalog. We’ve a huge announcement lined up and loads of new ideas but first, we’d like to present our 20th release, back in our home country, the UK. ‘Wing-half‘ is the debut album by Lancashire-born Londoner FragileField or Lawrence Berry to his mother (who features in the cover artwork, by the way). Wing-half really pushes the boundaries in terms of genre in general, and certainly for Whitelabrecs. Lawrence skillfully blends notes of Jazz, Modern Classical, Ambient and Post Rock music with the assistance of several musicians and the studio space at Huddersfield University. This one should cross over and appeal to fans of several different experimental styles so it’s difficult to pin-point similar artists. But if we’re pressed, we’d have to say Hood, Sam Prekop or Tape. It’s available now on Whitelabrecs in a very low run of just 50 CDrs.

Lawrence Berry, originally from Lancashire has been writing and composing music for as long as he can remember and has been playing guitar since the age of six. Towards the end of his studies, Lawrence established the FragileField project as he made use of the wealth of musical equipment available at the university. With the aid of studios kitted with top quality hardware and a range of instruments including grand pianos, double basses, trumpets and saxophones, the varying but musical sound of FragileField developed.

Lawrence adopts a free-thinking approach to composition, incorporating his myriad influences of William Walton, Wayne Shorter, Talk Talk, Burial and Tim Hecker as Modern Classical sounds meet Ambient, Post-Rock and Jazz. With the cover artwork scanned from an old photograph of his mother, Lawrence’s chosen theme for this mini album is in part family. The album’s title ‘Wing-half’ was the position his grandfather Walter Whitehurst played for Manchester United in the 1950’s, a brilliant man that he got to know well up until the first year of college when he passed away suddenly.

Wing-half is comprised of five tracks that are all inter-related, sequenced to allow the off-kilter moments chance to evolve. This is perhaps the most melodic record we have released on Whitelabrecs so far and marks a departure for the warmer months that lie ahead. There is a real vibrancy as the wealth of musical genres blend together yet the sound ebbs and flows as quieter, more reflective moments are overlapped by drums, jazz and rock inspired passages. Clocking in at 28 minutes, you’ll find that the album can easily be listened to in one sitting as it flits between moods and themes, as if reflecting on a life well-lived.
At the end, thoughts return to Mr Whitehurst as this colourful journey curtails suddenly – on reflection you’ll be left breathless as you
contemplate the ups and downs of the constantly evolving Wing-Half.”

Out now! WLR005 Ondrej Zajac – Monolith

We’re now up to our fifth release with approved demos mounting. Whitelabrecs has already covered a lot of musical ground and we’re pleased to push this further with this excellent debut from Ondrej Zajac. ‘Monolith‘ is a record that is born out of several year’s worth of experimenting from this Slovakian artist and will appeal to fans of lulling post-rock guitar textures, with a little light noise and electronics.
The album went live to our mailing list last weekend and we’ve already shifted most of these copies. Ondrej has been writing guitar music for many years and feels there is a strong difference between someone who plays guitar and someone who makes music. He has discovered far more from striving to create a sound that is his own as opposed to playing other people’s music. This begins of course with the guitar as a starting point and the journey started when he began composing folk sketches during his teens. These were built upon, developed and twisted over the years and many of the sounds and ideas from these early sketches have found their way into his first album ‘Monolith’, in some form. In terms of influences, Ondrej is keen to stay free from defined genre-based music and prefers to allow a wide variety of sonic, literary and importantly, architectural influences shape his work.

The result of these influences and some patient 8 years spent refining the smallest of detail combine into ‘Monolith’, a record of faintness, emptiness and sadness. During this time, Ondrej poured himself into the creative process and immersed himself in the sum of his improvisations. For around three months, he practically lived and breathed his work and endured countless nights when the music got stuck into his head, filtering into his dreams. He’d wake up feeling completely exhausted, only to repeat the process over and over through the coming weeks. Something compelled him to push for the finish line and arrive upon his very first album, in which he has selected not necessarily the best, but the most honest moments of his hard work. It struck him one Saturday; his work was at last complete.

Time had helped him stray as far away from those early folk songs as possible, only to gradually return to them as he strived to identify his own sound, possibilities and his limits. The return journey is one that saw him embrace his older material in searching for the innocence of the early days when he was just a ‘student’. In a pursuit of his younger self, Ondrej has closed some parts of his musical life within this album, with the sounds and details combining as one consistent piece of music; a monolithic milestone. For this reason, his last 8 years of substance is entitled Monolith.
