We usually release new music at the weekends but for this one, we decided to give a traditional Monday morning release a try! In this new digital edition, a departure from our CDr editions and eRecord series, we welcome Glåsbird with an album called cinéma noir, themed around black and white drama film. Each track has a cryptic title, with an accompanying photograph by Peter Nejedly. Along with the music, these sketch out scenes from an un-written movie, yet to be filmed.

“Since the project’s inception in 2018, anonymous artist Glåsbird has amassed a discography entirely dedicated to geographic themes. Each album from the ‘A Sonic Expedition’ series has been composed specifically as an imaginary film documentary, themed around a specific country, region or remote location. This work has led to some film work, such as Return To Sea and Sardinia and Casa Occupata. With this latest record, the music and its close affinity to visuals is the central theme, as Glåsbird explores a non-geographic theme for the first time. It is also the first digital-only album by this artist.

Cinéma Noir is intended to play out the soundtrack to a film that was never made. The track titles are cryptic, as the music sketches out scenes of a noir movie. Some pieces use wide-screened orchestration techniques whereas others use pensive, sprawling or tensioned tones to draw out cinematic moods.

If the track titles are too mysterious, then it may become ever so slightly clearer with monochrome photography by Peter Nejedly, who has provided 10 images; one to accompany each track. These pictures were matched to the track titles and their compositions by Glåsbird, who hopes that your own imagination will form the missing movie scenes.“

Our physical editions for 2021 begin with a the return of a collaboration between James Osland and Finn Kelvin. Previous releases have appeared on Kate Carr’s Flaming Pines and our sister netlabel Audio Gourmet. Their new album ‘Don’t Worry, I’m With You‘ will be out this Saturday the 20th of February and features a collection of deep treated drones, improvised guitar sounds fed through a series of bespoke pedals.

This limited edition CDr edition makes use of photography provided by Peter Nejedly, in our sleek minimal design template, new for 2021, complete with a vinyl-effect disc.

“Don’t Worry I’m With You is a new collaborative album between James Osland and Finn Kelvin who first met one another at Bath Spa University, UK. They initially performed as part of the Elm Collective before releasing an EP under their respective names, on our sister netlabel Audio Gourmet. Their debut album ‘Colourless’ was released via Kate Carr’s Flaming Pines label in 2017 and this new record is their follow-up.

This record was created via remote exchanges of material at the beginning of the emerging pandemic. The resulting nine pieces are a set of foggy, atmospheric works which draw reflections from the passing of James’s grandfather at the beginning of 2020. James’s grandfather suffered with dementia for a long time and Don’t Worry, I’m With You explores the dark and unsettling place the mind must go when suffering with the disease, unable to communicate with those who love you.

The album features two very different approaches to sound creating as James focused on a purely digital sound through the complex processing of electronic sound beds, whilst Finn’s parts were guitar performances fed through a series of bespoke pedals. The human glimmers of guitar that are interspersed between layers of confusion, provide twists and turns throughout, as a milieu of contrasting moments.

The odd and unlikely emotions of sadness and relief meld together, as clearly recollected memories are interspersed with a vacant hum of melancholy and occasional paths of darkness. The album finishes to mark James’s grandfather’s passing on the 10th January 2020; the track ‘Your Love, I Don’t Want To Lose’ is a reflection of the final release from this disease.“

Coming soon…Old Amica – Taiga

Last week we shared a teaser video of our next release which will be by Stockholm/Umeå, Sweden artists Old Amica in what will be their 6th album and their 2nd instrumental. Taiga began as music to score a film but once that process had passed, this duo set about working their material along with new recordings into an album, centered around childhood memories. This one’s a thoroughly well detailed, well paced album which straddles Electro Acoustic, Post Rock, Ambient and Modern Classical. This will be available in 2019’s signature gatefold-LP style CD, in a run of 100 copies with packaging design arranged by the artists themselves. We’ll release this officially on or around the 29th of June 2019. Those who follow artists such as Helios, Library Tapes or Benoit Pioulard should enjoy this!

“‘Taiga’ is the sixth release by Swedish duo Old Amica and their second wordless album. It began as music to accompany moving images in a short film they scored, but ended up as a collection of small fragments of childhood memories. The music for the short movie later got nominated as Best Music Score at The Annual Copenhagen Film Festival. Taiga is the endless highways, it’s the pulsating colours that blanket the starry sky, the disconnection, the icicle prisms, the midnight sun, the polar nights, and the background hiss. It was inspired by the words of Karin Boye, the voice of Carl Sagan, and the sounds of Popol Vuh.

The short film, which is called Place. Poetry. Periphery was the starting point with the first pieces of music having been written some 650km apart. Filmmaker Jonas Börjesson from Halmstad followed the process of six poets and their interpretations on the theme of place, poetry and periphery and he enlisted Old Amica’s Johan from Stockholm and Linus from Umeå to create the music. After having finished the score, these musicians continued recording and adding sounds together in a basement in Stockholm.

Taiga is now a work of art in its own right, whilst it still leans back towards its roots in the moving imagery which inspired it. This album ended up as a collection of small postcards of childhood memories, which is also depicted visually through the music video for Sävast and two teaser videos.”

Our next highly limited edition gatefold vinyl-effect CD sees Berlin, Germany based artist Sven Laux return, who released the now out of print Schachmatt with us in 2018. ODD is an emotional and personal album for Sven, following the birth of his daughter and a move to a new house with a new studio. It’s the first album he created in his new environment and it is a beautiful Modern Classical album, featuring the monochrome photography of Peter Nejedly. As usual for 2019, this will be available in 2019’s signature gatefold-LP style CD, in a run of 100 copies. Based on how quickly Schachmatt sold out, it’s recommended to grab a copy quick as these won’t hang around! We’ll release this officially on or around the 8th of June 2019. Those who follow artists such as Max Richter, Ben Frost or Glåsbird should enjoy this!

“We’re pleased to welcome back Berlin based artist Sven Laux, responsible for the now out of print Schachmatt which we released in 2018. Sven has been no stranger to the Ambient and Modern Classical scenes since then, with a release on Archives, a collaboration with Daniela Orvin as well as working on his new label Seasides On Postcards.

ODD is the first album Sven has created in his new studio, after moving into a new place following the birth of his daughter. Whilst working on the album, he always had in mind that there are calm parts in life followed by faster parts. He depicts the peaks and troughs of our existence through soft swathes of orchestral ambience interspersed by moments of rhythmic strings and electronic pulses.
Sven draws inspiration from the film soundtrack greats and constantly strives to build a bridge between classical music and Ambient; in ODD he created an entirely digital album but worked hard to program the right timbres to achieve a realistic orchestral sound.

There is a settled feeling to ODD thanks to long passages of repetitive strings and this forms the backdrop of the album as a broadly melancholic listen, laced with emotion from Sven’s own experiences. These are intended to draw the listener into the stories and absorb them. An overwhelming new dawn of possibilities becomes the theme for Sven with his new home, studio and indeed the new life of his baby daughter beginning this chapter.
What does ODD stand for? One Dramatic Day? Opening Doors? Is it a phrase in German? Does it mean anything? It will remain undefined. For us, these seven untitled pieces serve as a cinematic milieu, with the monochrome packaging presented as close-up film reels covered in dust.

“Samsuo is an artist based in Cambridge, UK with a previous release on the Recycled Plastics label and also records as S L Visitor and Demi Odessa. His work as Samsuo began in 2017 and The Other Gold Side is the debut album release on a label outside of his Bandcamp page.
With a background in DJing including work for Ministry of Sound, Samsuo’s Ambient work here draws in looping techniques to create revolving drones, perhaps in a style that meets the minds of Jan Jelinek and Stars of the Lid along with the tranquillity of Chihei Hatakeyama.

The Other Gold Side is as murky as it is fragile, both resting and haunting at the same time. A substantial amount of the music was built around guitar and synth improvisations, looped and with additional overdubs. Sessions could take from between 5 and 20 minutes and it was discovered that within the mistakes, some of the more interesting sounds could be achieved with time stretching and additional processing techniques.

The album was produced after a hectic summer, during a particularly quiet Autumn, when all of the business seemed to feel as it were fading out. Samsuo was drawn to drone and looped sounds to fill in the spaces of silence and he’d spend a lot of time watching the trees and changes in nature during this colourful season. The album he was producing would start out large and drawn out before branching off like a tree, with the tiniest sonic details forming into countless minutiae. The Other Gold Side is a record which explores repetition and the potential complexity of replication is depicted in the quarters of ceramic dish in which photographer Peter Nejedly has supplied for the cover artwork. For the CD packaging, this cover image is flipped as if the dish is turning back into itself, just like the folds of warm, lush drones which represent the turning of seasons, the endless passing of time and things being broken down and reforming anew.”

We’re moving towards spring and have racked up 3 releases this year so far. Next the run count of 100 copies continues with another gatefold LP style packaging design, this time by Polar Seas label boss anthéne. Asymmetry not only provides a set of lulling synth and guitar drones laced with hiss and static but it also features two familiar names in Ambient music; Peter Nejedly returns with more beautiful photography and Ian Hawgood is on mastering duty. We’ll release this on or around the 6th of April 2019. The theme within asymmetry was originally about assembling unrelated and differing material. However, somewhere unintentionally, an indescribable theme emerges from nothing to blanket your eyes and ears. Those who follow artists such as Kyle Bobby Dunn, Stars of the Lid or Billow Observatory may enjoy this one!

“Anthéne is Toronto, Canada based artist Brad Deschamps who has been recording Ambient music since 2011, after also forming part of the duo North Atlantic Drift for which he’d performed alongside artists such as Benoit Pioulard and Bing and Ruth. Solo releases have emerged on leading labels such as Hibernate, Sound In Silence and most recently Home Normal, who released ‘weightless’ only last month which label boss Ian Hawgood describes on the website as ‘warm analog sleep echoes’. Brad also runs the magnificent Polar Seas Recording label, which has released material from artists such as Mikael Lind, Celer and Andrew Tasselmyer.

We’re pleased to present the next release in Brad’s catalog, which is entitled ‘asymmetry’ as he strived to explore different depths of sound. The title of the album was born out of his idea of recording in different ways to create narrow, saturated recordings as well as widescreen ambience yet trying to blend these works together as a cohesive whole. Guitar and effects pedals, synthesizers and field recordings are some of the elements that form the basis of this dynamic yet minimal range of compositions but a simple yet key ingredient can be heard in the warm and gentle tape hiss which underpins the record.

Whilst Brad’s ideas are rooted in joining disparate, unrelated textures, the resulting record is something that makes sense; the seven pieces have been lovingly mastered by Ian Hawgood, the sheer patience of each gently unfolding track will comfort even the most restless of soul and the packaging design features artwork from Peter Nejedly. Somewhere, unintentionally, an indescribable theme emerges from nothing to blanket your eyes and ears.”

Still we keep the run count at 100 copies of special gatefold LP style packaging design, with our last release by Glåsbird which has almost sold out. Next up we welcome Cologne, Germany based artist Jens Pauly whose last album r/f emerged in 2017 and Karlrecords. Vihne is a delicate sprinkling of electro-acoustic melancholy over 8 tracks, complete with beautiful artwork courtesy of photography by Chung Sungdong and Peter Nejedly, as well as the nifty design work by Jens. We’ll release this on or around the 9th of March 2019. The floating fragments of piano, guitars, synth and sine waves will surely appeal to those who follow the 12k catalog, in particular Marcus Fischer, Taylor Deupree or Solo Andata.

“Floating through empty streets late at night. No other people around, no distraction from a dialogue happening inside of you – looking for something, looking for nothing, looking for anything relevant.
Jens Pauly’s second album ‘Vihne’ is the soundtrack to a search between flickering lights and a cloudy sky, between emptiness and being alive. It asks the essential questions within us, in a tranquil state neither here nor there.
Each track marks a microcosm of its own, a small journey through worlds engulfed in memories.

Jens Pauly is a musician and artist from Cologne, Germany, who has previously released an album named r/f on Karlrecords. In his earlier years, Jens performed in punk and metal bands before he eventually began to compose more synth-based solo work as Ghostrider which he released with labels such as Digitalis and Tranquility Tapes.
Since debuting under his own name with r/f in 2017, Jens has developed an electro-acoustic sound which is both sparse and engulfing yet at the same time warm and melancholic. When we first heard Jens’ demo, we were reminded of the beautiful Ambient sounds that 12k might put out, such as work by Marcus Fischer, Solo Andata and Taylor Deupree. However, Jens has since shared with us that some of the artists that influenced this work are Oren Ambarchi, early Hiroshi Yoshimura and Vikki Jackman.

There is a sound palette that at first listen is stripped back but on closer inspection, Vihne is something steeped in detail, the music flows and feels weightless, as passages of guitars, piano, sine wave and cassette dictaphone recordings softly collide into a dreamy collage. If r/f was ‘5 straight lines in a circle’, Vihne is ‘8 circles on a line’ and although these tracks are parts of the wider picture of this album, it is intended to transfer an overall atmosphere as one whole journey.”
