Out Now! Various Artists – The Home Diaries

We’re delighted to get back to making CDs again after our break over December. It was good to have some down time and to do some planning too but it’s wonderful to be back, with our exciting schedule for 2021.
We’d like to thank all of those who supported us over this period, getting involved with our winter sale. Our stock cupboard is looking lighter and at last there is some space in the drawer for this year’s release schedule!

First up is the double-album Home Diaries compilation, which includes a track from each of the 30 Home Diaries releases from last year. For those unfamiliar, Home Diaries was an invitation to artists to write a record about their situation in lockdown. It was a digital only series, put together to keep our label going after we had to stop releasing CDs.

We know that many prefer a physical edition and so we wanted to create something so that those who do are able to experience this series in some way. So we decided to go all out on the packaging for this one. There is a standard double gatefold edition as well as an ultra deluxe edition, in which the double gatefold CD is contained within a gold foil-printed matchbox, which also includes a booklet which contains a photo of each artist’s home.

There were only around 65 copies of the ultra deluxe to sell after artist allocations, and these have sold out already having been snapped up quickly by our subscribers. However, at the time of writing we have around 50 copies of the standard double album edition, which we feel is still quite a spectacle in itself. It’s complete with the cover artwork, which is an oil painting by Adrian Lane who re-imagined the original series cover.

Our low-run releases will be made available suddenly without official release dates, meaning they’re likely to sell out fast. The best way to keep informed is to join our mailing list which can be located through our website menu or you can click HERE

press release
“It’s fair to say that the events of the year 2020 will go down as quite a year and may form a large part of the history curriculum for the children of tomorrow. The pandemic is of course just part of the story, against a backdrop of political unrest, climate change and injustice too.

Whitelabrecs was affected with the closure of our local post office, meaning we were unable to ship our CDs. We also felt we had a duty not to hold up a queue of people and decided to stop production of our catalog. During that time, to make sure we still had a label left to return to, we launched the ambitious Home Diaries series. It ran for 3 months and in that relatively short space of time, the series reached 30 releases!

Home Diaries was an invitation to artists and musicians to create an album or EP to document their personal experience during the lockdown or social distancing conditions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The series reflects a range of sounds, styles and ideas, as each artist portrayed their own reflections uniquely, available as a digital only edition including a bonus interview and photos.
Each of the 30 digital editions in the Home Diaries series is an individual work of art, created to share the varying experiences felt by each artist.

This compilation album pulls together a track from each record, sequenced in a way that flows as a specially curated environment, over the course of two CDs. We have two versions available as follows:

A standard edition, which is a double-disc gatefold vinyl-effect CDr album, featuring a re-interpretation of the original cover artwork, painted by Adrian Lane.

A deluxe matchbox edition, in which the double-disc gatefold vinyl-effect CDr is housed inside a gold foil-etched box, which also contains a booklet which includes a photo from each artist’s home during lockdown. This version serves as a time capsule into the original series; a keepsake which is limited to just 70 copies.

If you opt for the digital version, this also includes the photo booklet as a bonus PDF item.

Home Diaries 015: Francis M. Gri

We’ve taken a pause from our schedule of CD albums due to our local post office closing, following the outbreak of Covid19. We launched a digital series called Home Diaries, in which we’ll release EPs and albums by an international line-up of artists, with the music created during lockdown and social distancing conditions.

The series reflects a range of sounds, styles and ideas, as each artist portrays their own reflections uniquely. Each release is digital only for now, as we hope to raise what we can to help keep our label ticking over at this time. The releases feature a recurring polaroid image of a small lonely house, with a coloured filter chosen by the artist for each respective release.

In our next edition, we welcome back Francis M. Gri from Milan, Italy. Francis contributed Apart to our catalog back in 2018 and also has releases on Time Released Sound and Slowcraft as well as his own label, KrysaliSound. For his Home Diaries edition, he original created a longform piece in the midst of the peak of the pandemic in Italy’s Lombardy region, based around Electric Piano keys. After he got in touch, Stanze e Distanze was a longform piece which he has developed further into a suite of 5 pieces, with added guitar, sansula and singing bowls. Electronic piano keys reflect the lonely socially-distant streets but also, the intimate warmth of being safe inside your own home. The singing bowls give a sense of distance and travel then, again, they also retain a meditative hum that is very much of the present. It is hoped that this record will provoke or aid an inner reflection and become a spring-board of positivity.

We have an exciting line-up to follow and each release will include bonus PDF liner notes, which has an interview with the artist on how they made the album, what their situation is like, what they have planned, their influences and what equipment/techniques they used.  There are also additional photos provided by the artist as part of the PDF too. We’re pleased to see Francis M. Gri return to our label after he contributed the album ‘Apart’ to our catalog back in 2018. Francis runs the KrysaliSound label and also has material on Slowcraft and Time Released Sound. Francis is from Milan in Italy’s worst affected area during this pandemic, the Lombardy region. He originally composed a longform piece named Stanze e Distanze shortly after the peak of the virus in his area, before he discovered our Home Diaries series.

After chatting with Francis, he went away to develop this piece into a suite of 5 sections, which he adapted with additional elements including guitar, sansula and singing bowls. It became a mini album and the title translates to ‘rooms and distances’, a simple title yet with plenty of scope for interpretation. Electronic piano keys reflect the lonely socially-distant streets but also, the intimate warmth of being safe inside your own home. The singing bowls give a sense of distance and travel then, again, they also retain a meditative hum that is very much of the present. It is hoped that this record will provoke or aid an inner reflection and become a spring-board of positivity.”

Out Now! Francis M. Gri – Apart

We’ve some big news to announce and that’s that Harry (the label owner) and his wife will be having a baby in October, so things may slow down just a little towards the end of the year as he adjusts to a few changes…
There’s a lot of the schedule to work to so the plan is step things up a bit so don’t be surprised to see a couple of albums emerge per month from here on in. Stay tuned too for something special to celebrate our 50th release!

Next we head over to Italy to welcome Francis M. Gri, who records under his own name and is based in Milan. Francis runs the KrysaliSound label and is also scheduled to release an album with US label Time Released Sound. His work for us was produced using reworked material assembled from his hard-drive and these are longer pieces than we tend to release. Each piece is completely enveloping, with guitar and synth drones joined by loops, reversing textures and light shards of noise/static. This should grab those who follow Christopher WillitsFennesz or Leandro Fresco.

You can listen to a preview of the album by using the Soundcloud player below or grab one of the remaining copies or a digital version by clicking the bandcamp player or link below.

This went to out to our mailing list last weekend and at time of writing, we’ve still got some copies left. To find out more, you can click the link below or on the image above to listen. To avoid missing out on our future releases, you ca join our mailing list HERE

press release
Francis M. Gri is a multi-instrumental composer currently residing in Milan, Italy, who also curates the KrysaliSound record label. His previous releases have appeared on his own label as well as Final Muzik and he’s also due an album on US imprint Time Released Sound.
Francis began playing guitar when he was 13 before he also progressed to piano and in time he began to perform as part of his first dark ethereal band ‘All My Faith Lost’. His musical experiences have culminated in his work under his own name since 2010, which straddles the Ambient, Electro Acoustic and Electronic genres. His studio material draws influence from many contemporary artists, such as Taylor Deupree, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Sigur Ros and Ludovico Einaudi.

Apart shares a name with a former production moniker, as Francis compiles recordings made from unpublished works under this name. The material was gathered from a hard-drive backup created between 2003 and 2005 where he found the previously completed tracks would not load due to a technical glitch. Fortunately he had saved the individual sound components so he decided to rework these into new compositions. He decided not to add any additional tracks and set about stretching, detuning, reversing and treating the sounds with effects before he arrived at a set of 2 mid-length pieces. He created a new piece entitled ‘Last’ which was created around the time he was working with ‘In This Room’ and ‘Hidden Reflections’ and originally shared the work as a free download.

Not long after, Francis had sent us his album and we were thoroughly impressed, feeling that these three tracks serve as a cohesive album experience and deserved a physical release.
The longer-form nature of the tracks which loop with folds of subtle emotional detail make for an immersive listening experience that you’ll surely get lost in, as shimmering drones, synth and guitar lines collide effortlessly.
