eRecord011 john reidar holmes – manichees & madmen

Today we have a new edition in our digital-only series, eRecords!
‘manichees and madmen’ is an album from Malmö, Sweden based artist John Reidar Holmes with a record which blends electronic ambience with guitar-led electro acoustics.

eRecords is a digital record series created by Whitelabrecs, to run alongside our physical releases. These editions aim to transform the digital format into something that can be experienced in a similar way to a listener’s interaction with a real, white label vinyl record. Each edition includes a special PDF scrapbook including polaroids and liner notes.

We do not publish details about the concepts or production methods of a release so that the liner notes and content in each scrapbook will reveal the background of each edition in the series.

Out Now! Polaroid Notes – Cloud Anthems

Here’s the second of two releases out now on Whitelabrecs, fresh for September. ‘Cloud Anthems‘ is a set of misty piano and synth vignettes, combining moody compositions with vintage synth abstractions. It’s out now in a run of 100 gatefold vinyl-effect CDrs after a short pre-order on Bandcamp Friday. The best way to keep informed about our low-run releases, is to join our mailing list, and we’ll make sure you’re the first to hear!

press release
“Once again, we’re excited to unveil another Polaroid Notes release, the fourth album by this Germany based artist in our discography. Alongside his side-project as Kraut Sounds, editions have also appeared on labels such as Büro Für Erdrotation, Weber & Alcantu and his own label Drone Works International.

In this latest edition ‘Cloud Anthems’, the music takes influence from the packaging photography, which was taken by the artist one sunny January at the Riegsee, a small lake in front of the Bavarian Alps. The entire lake had frozen over due to low temperatures in the weeks before. Later that afternoon fog rolled in and together with the sun, the frozen lake and leafless trees made a wonderful contrast. The whole scenario lasted only a few minutes before everything disappeared into the clouds of dense fog. As beautiful as the whole day was, those few moments were something very special to behold.

Polaroid Notes enjoys these contrasts, both in nature and in music too. ‘Cloud Anthems’ is a series of unique contrasts that harmonise perfectly, remaining in mind for a while after they have passed. Piano sounds and loops interact with flashes of harsh energy and strange experimental sounds from old analog synthesizers. A particular focus for this record is the VCS3 synthesiser, a portable synth from the late 60s; whilst a digital replica was used here, the artist found this to be the perfect way to express the themes for this record. Sounds and melodies flow into each other spontaneously like colours of an abstract painting, layer by layer.

Out Now! The Inventors of Aircraft – Edge of Imagination

We have two new releases out today for July and in this one we welcome back Phil Tomsett under his The Inventors of Aircraft alias, in an album that follows Velatore and Home Diaries 027. This new album is a collection of otherworldly electronic drones with moments of intensity and near-chaos, mysterious exploratory caves and dreamy passages of retro-futurism.

Edge of Imagination is out now in a run of 100 copies! The best way to keep informed about our low-run releases, is to join our mailing list, and we’ll make sure you’re the first to hear!

press release
“The Inventors of Aircraft is UK based artist Phil Tomsett, who has released with labels including Time Released Sound, Wist Rec, Home Normal and Fluid Audio across this project, and under his own name. You may also recall that Phil contributed the 27th edition of our Home Diaries series and the album Velatore, also out in 2020.

‘The Edge of Imagination’ is the latest record under The Inventors of Aircraft pseudonym which builds on lush synths and intelligent melodies. The album is an exploration of the space between virtual and the real, the conscious and sub-conscious and somewhere in between reality and a dream. It plays through as a journey, initiated by the opening track ‘Gateway’, which takes the listener in before the subsequent tracks delve deeper and deeper into a cybernetic dreamworld.

There are moments of intensity and near-chaos, mysterious explorative caves and dreamy passages of retro-futurism. We won’t spoil the order of these events in this release text, but the title of the penultimate track is ‘Rescued’, a triumphant piece which precedes ‘Home’. The closing moments of this final piece may well find you back home in the reality of planet earth, as this otherworldly experience closes.

Coming soon… morimoto naoki – soak

Here’s the second of our two new releases lined-up for the 12th of March. We’re pleased to be joined by Tokyo, Japan based artist morimoto naoki for this one, with an album that follows recent releases on Seil and ROHS! ‘Soak‘ will be out for pre-order this coming Bandcamp Friday, the 4th of March and the melancholy blend of light electronics, field recordings and manipulated acoustics makes this record a pleasant listen from start to finish.

Soak‘ will be available in one of our typically low runs of 100 gatefold vinyl-effect CDrs, complete with photography by Harry Towell.

It will be released officially on Saturday the 12th of March. If you join our mailing list using the link below, we’ll make sure you’re the first to hear.

press release
“morimoto naoki is an electronic and ambient composer from Tokyo in Japan, with previous releases on labels that include Seil, Inner Ocean and ROHS!. He started writing music around a decade ago and his approach draws in various instrument samples and every day sounds which he captures from his daily routines.

There is an undoubted influence from the Japanese ambient and electronica scenes and his restful, lightly fractured acoustic sound stands up to that of his peers. In this new record ‘Soak’, morimoto’s breathes a sense of warmth and stillness into the world as acoustic and electric guitars, synthesizers, toy pianos and metallophones are woven into a tapestry of beautiful tones. Field recordings add narrative whilst cassette tape recordings give further warmth and charm.

The concept for this record is to ‘soak’ the listener into the happenstances of daily life around them. The idea came about during the recording process as the field recordings were captured; morimoto found that listening to the world around him revealed many ambient textures that might normally go unnoticed. The process of trying to absorb these consciously felt like a ‘soaking’ process.
