Coming soon… blochemy – sen

Here’s the second of two physical releases set to drop in June; ‘sen‘ by Ostrava, Czech Republic based artist blochemy, who some may recall from his past Whitelabrecs releases aithem and nebe. This album is full of wobbly summer tape drones, created from guitar and field recordings. It will be available officially in a run of 100 CDrs in our signature gatefold vinyl-effect sleeves. The album will be out officially on Saturday the 10th of June after a pre-order on the 3rd of June. If you follow us on Bandcamp (Click HERE) we’ll make sure you’re the first to hear.

press release
“This new album by blochemy is the third album edition we’ve released, following 2020’s ‘nebe’ and 2021’s ‘aithem’. This artist, hailing from Czech Republic also contributed the 21st edition of our Home Diaries series, and has music available through other labels such as Krysalisound, Shimmering Moods, Hibernate, Clean Error Records and Sun Sea Sky Production.

Active in electronic music production since the mid-1990s and inspired by intelligent music forms such as IDM and Ambient, the blochemy sound is created inside a small home studio, as a means of escapism and self-expression. As such, experimentation and creativity is the driving force behind his sound and so themes and concepts take a back-step. Simple, singular word track titles serve as cryptic hints of fractured ideas, to accompany a faded filigree minimalism.

In ‘sen’, blochemy used electric guitar, field recordings and tapes, as well as hardware and software to develop this set of nine melancholy reveries. The album name translates to mean dream in Czech and whilst this is not a clearly defined concept, the hazy sound reflects the artist’s love of sleeping, and dreaming to ambient music late at night. Whether it’s the low-end hum that pulls you into slumber, the nostalgic summer field recordings or shimmering tape noise, this one’s likely to be a go-to ‘music for sleeping’ album.

Coming soon… The Dead Bell – A Moment at Dawn

Our next release is a collaboration between glacis and The Green Kingdom with their debut album as The Dead Bell which is called ‘A Moment at Dawn’. This record fuses the raw and intimate sounds of glacis’ piano with TGK’s Americana tinged ambience. This album will be available officially in a run of 100 CDrs in our signature gatefold vinyl-effect sleeves. The album will be out officially on Saturday the 15th of April after a pre-order on the 7th of April. If you follow us on Bandcamp (Click HERE) we’ll make sure you’re the first to hear.

press release
“We’re proud to present the debut album from The Dead Bell which is a Trans-Atlantic collaboration between Euan Millar-McMeeken (Glacis) and Michael Cottone (The Green Kingdom). Between them, these experienced artists have released their music through numerous labels including the likes of Home Normal, Lost Tribe Sound, Dronarivm, Oscarson, Sound in Silence, Hidden Vibes, Fluid Audio, Rusted Tone and Past Inside the Present. Some may recall that Euan had a previous release with us back in 2020; another collaborative album which was with Gavin Miller.

Euan is originally from Dundee in Scotland but now works in London, via Newcastle and Edinburgh. He developed his solo and studio work as glacis in 2010,after many years spent performing vocals and keys in a band. Other collaborations include gallowglas with Johan G Winther and Civic Hall with Craig Tattersall. Mike has been active as The Green Kingdom since 2005 and hails from Shelby Township, Michigan. He has developed an electro-acoustic sound that blends guitars, synths, sampled textures and field recordings.

‘A Moment at Dawn’ combines Euan’s intimate-sounding piano recordings and additional software-driven sounds with Mike’s signature guitar and melodic embellishments, with no set theme or concept. The project progressed naturally, as these two musicians shared and developed their sounds and ideas. The cover artwork by Casey Horner had become a focal point for their work and aptly reflects the title of the album; A Moment at Dawn.

Out Now! Glåsbird – Pacifica

Our next release is ‘Pacifica‘ by Glåsbird who is an anonymous artist currently working on a multi-album geographical series called A Sonic Expedition and this is the seventh edition of the series, after previous albums being based on Greenland, Svalbard, the Norwegian Fjords, Novaya Zemlya, Siberia and Himalaya. This album is the most experimental to date, with exotic percussion carved out of cheap instruments, tropical poly-rhythms, tape decay and field recordings. This album will be available officially in a run of 100 CDrs in our signature gatefold vinyl-effect sleeves. The album is out today in a run of 100 copies after a short pre-order. The CDs have all sold out however, you can still check out the digital version. If you follow us on Bandcamp (Click HERE) we’ll make sure you’re the first to hear.

press release
“Glåsbird’s travelogue of sound advances further, with this seventh edition in the series heading to warmer, more exotic climes. The A Sonic Expedition series is this anonymous artist’s armchair exploration of the world around us and it has to date put down roots in Greenland, Svalbard, Norway, Novaya Zemlya, Siberia and the Himalayas. With this latest excursion, the snowy, treacherous peaks of Everest are traded for the tropically vast Pacific Ocean.

As fans of the artist will already be aware, Glåsbird researches each geographic location with great intrigue and fascination, scouring Google Earth satellite imagery, watching documentaries, reviewing vintage maps and reading articles about its history and culture. Whilst the enormity of this ocean was obvious from looking at the globe, what became apparent was the scale of diversity across the thousands of islands in the region, whether it be the landscapes, culture or even the rare species of bird. Studying history revealed some dark tales, of challenging sea voyages, crocodiles and even cannibalism. As always, it also gave the artist opportunity to make new discoveries, such as how atolls are formed from ancient volcanoes and theories on how the Moai of Easter Island were moved across the landscape.

Glåsbird felt that their now signature modern classical style needed to change for this record, as these ambient portraits of the Pacific offer surely the most adventurous sound to date from this artist. Percussive rhythms were carved out of cheap percussion instruments, exotic poly-rhythms glisten alongside sounds of rolling ocean waves and the thriving nature scenes. Sun bleached tape decays atop warm, ebbing bass and synth tones.

In Pacifica, Glåsbird traces a set route from one island to the next, marked by each track on the album. It begins with a view of La Perouse Pinnacle from inside the French Frigate Shoals. This pillar of rock has been known to cause shipwrecks and general confusion amongst seafarers who’d mistaken it for a ship when seen from distance. The journey continues many miles of sea south, to the triangular shaped Kingman Reef before heading off to explore the lake in the middle of Washington Island, also known as Teraina. The journey heads a long way across the ocean in an easterly direction, to the Galápagos Islands and then onto the remote Easter Island, home of the Moai stones. The next leg of the journey returns in a westerly direction, arriving at Mangareva which is the main part of the Gambier Islands. The French Polynesian paradise island of Bora Bora follows, before a stop at the small wooded island of Tafahi in Tonga. Inyeug, the most northerly island of Vanuatu is the next destination, famed for Queen Elizabeth II’s visit back in 1974. The tempo of the percussive loops notches up a little, as the next track represents the Solomon Islands and then this tour ends on the island of Yap, with echoes of Yapese rituals and lapping ocean waves closing the final piece which is called Rumung.

Out Now! Guy Gelem – Passing by and Through

Here’s the second of our two new releases for February, with this one being from Israel’s Guy Gelem. We’ve been working with Guy Gelem for years now; in fact, ever since 2016 when his album ‘Entirety’ helped kick-off the label in its inaugural year. His latest album ‘Passing by and Through‘ blends cello and guitar with casio keyboard sounds and field recordings, rounded off by the specially painted cover artwork from Amit. The album is out today in a run of 100 gold edition vinyl-effect CDrs. If you follow us on Bandcamp (Click HERE) we’ll keep you updated when we have new releases.

press release
“Guy Gelem is a composer from Israel, who returns to the Whitelabrecs discography following digital release ‘Scenario’ and 2016’s ‘Entirety’. Guy has also created music for labels including Rural Colours, Split Femur, Quiet Design, Mini 50 ,Time Released Sound and Polar Seas. With the latter, he collaborated alongside Whitelabrecs owner Harry Towell, in an album called ‘Restful Spaces’.

Guy performs cello as part of ensembles and also comes from a background of playing electric guitar in bands. Since focusing on his own solo compositions, he typically combines both of these instruments together in his work, influenced by many styles including neo classical, jazz, electronic, post rock, Arabic and North African music.

For his latest album ‘Passing by and Through’, Guy began by recording layers of organic sounds, such as field recordings and some experiments on a Casio Earl 90 keyboard, as well as cello and guitar performances. Improvisation and an experimental approach was central to the creation of this music, focusing on a central nostalgic theme as the creative force. This album is dedicated to Guy’s personal journey in life so far, a fusion of periods, places, chapters, situations and other sentimental motifs. Each track title gives the listener clues about the detail that inspired the music. Nostalgia often brings about melancholy feelings but Guy wanted this record to glance optimistically towards the future too.

Out Now! Peter Kvidera – Verism

Here’s the first of two new releases for February, with this one being from US based artist Peter Kvidera. It’s a scratcy, tape-decayed album of electro-acoustic drones, complete with artwork which has been created by Peter himself. This one will appeal to those who enjoy music on labels such as 12k or Seil, or to Whitelabrecs fans, Blochemy, Pruski or Logic Moon. Verism is out today in a run of 100 gold edition vinyl-effect CDrs. If you follow us on Bandcamp (Click HERE) we’ll keep you updated when we have new releases.

press release
“Peter Kvidera is Minneapolis, US based artist Peter Kvidera, who has previously released albums on Aether Sound, as well as creating material for Triplicate Records and contributing a track for Jogging House’s ‘A Compilation For Oceana’ in 2021. After dedicating time in childhood making music with trumpet and guitar, Peter progressed into manipulating electronic sounds in high school and he has been doing it ever since. His work now is typically born through experimenting with new techniques, instruments and processes; throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.

For ‘Verism’, a liminal sleep sound became the hook, as a fuzzy form of minimalism sprawled across 9 hazy tracks. A simple loop-based approach was adopted, gathering sampled instruments and field recordings and funneling them through software utilities. Peter was interested in exploring the line between music and sound, questioning what makes a group of sounds take the step into becoming music versus an audio collage of gathered sounds. He experimented with manipulating the timbre of instruments and other audio, to explore the tipping points of whether their original source is still traceable.

It is Peter’s hope that this work of obscured sounds and textures falls just over the line, into musical territory.
