Out Now! Jack Hyde – Lowlands

2019 has been another busy year for us, perhaps our busiest yet after increasing our run count from 50 to 100 CDrs for each release! So we’d like to release one more album, then take a breather ready for what promises to be an exciting 2020. We’ll have a couple of surprises up our sleeve still but in the meantime, we welcome Jack Hyde with his debut album named Lowlands‘, a micro-detailed Ambient album with a subtle hint of dub and the lightest of electronica. If you like creativity, variety and attention to detail in your Ambient music then this could be just for you! This will be available in 2019’s signature gatefold-LP style CD, in a run of 100 copies  and we’ll release this officially on or around the 16th of November 2019. This one might appeal to artists such as Shuttle358, The Green Kingdom or Segue.

Lowlands was released to subscribers of our mailing list last weekend, who had the first opportunity to grab a copy and these have been selling fast! You can stream the album on Bandcamp and of course, grab one of the remaining physical copies or a download if you prefer by clicking the link below or image above. press release
“Jack Hyde is a British artist currently based in Edinburgh where he is studying a degree in sound design. He released tracks Heather and Ebb via American label Past Inside The Present. These pieces became the starting point for his debut album, which becomes the final release in busy a 2019 for us.

Jack’s sound draws on wide musical influences; from the folk and psychedelic music he discovered via his father, to the dub and dance music exposure from his time residing in an urban environment, as well as his taste for ambient and experimental artists such as the 12k label. He approaches his own sound design by collecting a range of sonic material, to build a library of sound in which to instigate a project. Textures and loops are developed through a collage approach with samples and additional instrumentation being processed and mangled into a new cohesive whole.

Whilst living in London, Jack created Lowlands, a collection of fifteen sketches presented as a sound diary of sorts. It does not have a fixed concept, but the track titles are influenced by the landscapes he had visited, in which photos and field recordings were collected. The overlapping, slowly evolving sounds fold and unfold as a series of sonic impressions to map the images in Jack’s mind. The works are strongly linked to the natural world, which will feel apparent as you listen. Submerged, underwater drones and hydrophone-captures slowly spawn a lattice of minute detail beyond the aquatic weeds. Light of the outside world peers through the condensation-concealed windows of a humid greenhouse. The drone of distant ships fogging in over sea play out to heather flecked fells.”

Out Now! Tsone – Purification Verses

We’re pleased to welcome back Tsone to Whitelabrecs, who released WLR number seven last year, a beautiful record long since sold-out. His new album is a set of five-minute-exact drones that will lull the mind with its delicate looping texture. For those unfamiliar, Tsone is Arizona, US based artist Tony Obr who’s released with labels such as Audiotalaia and Home Normal, with Ian Hawgood from the latter being responsible for mastering this one. Purification Verses should appeal to those who enjoy work by Marcus FischerRichard Ginns or Federico Durand – you can listen to a preview of the album by using the Soundcloud player below or keep a check on our Facebook or Instagram pages to preview the packaging when we share it.

This went to out to our mailing list last weekend and at time of writing, we’ve just got fifteen copies left! To find out, you can click the link below or on the image above to listen. To avoid missing out on future releases, you can join our mailing list HERE

press release
“Tsone is Phoenix, Arizona artist Tony Obr, who returns to Whitelabrecs having released ‘Dovetail’ with us back in May 2016. Over the last ten years he’s also released work with the likes of Home Normal, txt Recordings and Audiotalaia. Tony’s background includes playing woodwind in school bands as well as Jazz ensembles but particularly over the last decade his focus has been in making electronic music. He teaches electronic music and regularly puts into practice his visual arts background too and this all adds to his creative focus.

Purification Verses is a record that has been complete for quite some time and has been mastered by Home Normal label owner Ian Hawgood. It’s a record where Tony set himself the rule of using only two production tools: A cheap children’s keyboard synthesizer and a looping patch constructed with Max/MSP. He also limited post-processing on the sound to keep a consistency throughout. Tony would usually use a large pool of tools including hardware synthesizers, samplers, effects pedals and custom built software instruments. However, for Purification Verses, he focuses on a more singular approach by limiting the tools at his disposal. He wanted to investigate all of the possibilities available to him through this stripped-down and limited choice of tools.

The result of the investigation yielded a series of songs with an inherent unity and cohesion that runs between them. This unity is most apparent in the formal organisation of each song, namely, two looping patterns played against each other for exactly 5 minutes.
Tony drew upon his visual arts background for influence as the methods used to compose these pieces are similar to how one might construct a series of paintings of formally similar variations on a theme.”

Out Now! The Prairie Lines – Eyes Down Slowdown

Out now on Whitelabrecs, we’re pleased to announce the debut release by The Prairie Lines which is the new outlet for Bill Bawden, formerly known as Herzog. We’ve long been a follower of Bill’s work through his self-released/netlabel work as Herzog so we’re pleased to present this beautiful set of wintry Ambient/piano pieces. Eyes Down Slowdown features the familiarly beautiful artwork of Slovakian photographer Peter Nejedly and might be a record for those who enjoy work by Scissors and SellotapeHerzog (of course!) or Andrew Hargreaves. You can stream or purchase the album by clicking the player above.

press release
“South Londoner Bill Bawden has been releasing delicate ambient music since 2005 under various guises, most notably albums and EPs on Serein, 12Rec, Resting Bell, Audio Gourmet and Rural Colours under the name Herzog. On his first full-length release under his Prairie Lines moniker, Bill has continued to refine his sound, processing piano samples to bring out warm lo-fi textures and layers of static.
The prairie lines are wide open spaces and homely values. Pylons and cables stretching for miles. Lines of migration. Interrupted communications.

eyes down slowdown is a call to become more introspective, to temporarily reject the speed of life around you.
An invitation to a place of worship, stepping into a resonant holy chamber.. this is where we kneel. A secret home away from the buzzing city streets, but also a secret home inside yourself. The performance of a repetitive ritual in order to achieve some result. A bright melodic loop which gradually corrodes. A familiar sequence that gradually falls apart, an examination of what is necessary. A repetition to bring about
a trance-like state.. to see without seeing and hear without hearing. To touch hands from the sky.
A calm landing.., to descend to somewhere new… an open field and a gentle breeze.
To accept the familiar and unfamiliar as one, to be comfortable with life whatever it holds.
Stop haunting my door.. not a physical door but a way in. The ghost is not trying to gain access but preventing you or anyone close to you from gaining access. Smile but prepare. When you look inside yourself, what if you don’t like what you see, or it scares you?

Out Now! Overshift – Of Light and Shade

Out now on Whitelabrecs, we welcome a textured Ambient/minimal electronic producer from the United States, named Overshift who has appeared on labels such as Psicodelica, Yoruba Grooves and Galanding. Of Light and Shade is an immersive listen full of detail, intended for either conscious, or subconscious listening in line with Brian Eno’s original concept of Ambient music. Those who enjoy Krill.Minima, Robert Henke or Echospace might enjoy this record – you can stream or purchase the album by clicking the player above.
Of Light and Shade is also available in our usually limited run of 50 copies to the world, housed in vinyl imitation CDr packaging.

This went to out to our mailing list last weekend and at time of writing, we’ve got copies still available – to find out more or grab a copy, you can click the link below or on the image above to listen. To avoid missing out on future releases, you can join our mailing list HERE

press release
“Overshift is an Electronic Sound artist from New Jersey, USA who has released through several labels including Psicodelica, Yoruba Grooves, Galanding and Listen:React. At an early age, he became fascinated with DJing and learnt to mix on belt-driven turntables. Production was then the natural evolution as he began recording just after the millennium. After a ten year hiatus to focus on his career, the creative urge returned in 2013, as he assembled a small studio after time spent researching different room modes and installing proper acoustic treatment. This studio has been expanded and adapted as his collection of hardware and software has developed.

Overshift’s approach to music production is steeped in a ‘less is more’ approach as layered Ambient environments and textured Minimal Techno have become his signature. Initially, he will work on something new with a certain feeling or story in mind. This is usually something which correlates to an intellectual concept and can be inspired by almost anything. The process is usually a matter of just experimenting with sounds until it aligns with the concept that he intends to convey. Subtle background textures are carved from tape and vinyl noise. Random modular sequences and patches are prepared to compose a general melody and in some cases, percussive and rhythmic elements are developed. Once the basic building blocks are in place, slight variations are applied over a four to eight bar loop. From here, dozens and dozens of layers can be added from items such as field recordings, old vinyl records, textures, rhythms, but it is also not uncommon for there to be considerably less. All the while, a crucial element to the Overshift sound is the juxtaposed concept of controlled randomness: once a general arrangement is in place, multiple takes are patched randomly with generated sequences and modulation. Further micro-edits are developed from each take, using the bits that work, and deleting those which don’t.

Overshift straddles the lines between Ambient music and Minimal Techno striving to overlap these genres. For Whitelabrecs and in his album ‘Of Light and Shade’ he focuses more towards the Ambient aspect as marginal movements of innumerable sound sources combine to form what is ultimately a truly immersive listening experience, built from almost nothing. He aimed to flesh out a sonic duality and as a result, Of Light and Shade is an experience that could either be listened to intently, or simply heard.”

Out Now! Polaroid Notes – Unsung Memories

Today marks our 29th release as we welcome Polaroid Notes, who some may recall from our sister labels Tessellate and Audio Gourmet. Polaroid Notes is an artist named Andreas who resides in the Bavarian Alps, not far from Munich. His Ambient work is very much inspired by film and TV series, as he strives to carve out sketches for his own unreleased movie score. Unsung Memories plays out with each track as an episode with brooding piano and electronic drone texture. We suspect fans of Willits+SakamotoRobert Scott Thompson or Christof Dejean may enjoy this record – you can listen to the album in the Bandcamp player above.

Unsung Memories is out this weekend in a limited edition run of 50 copies to the world, packaged in our usual vinyl-imitation CDrs with polaroid artwork prints.

This went to out to our mailing list last weekend and at time of writing, we’ve got copies still available – to find out more or grab a copy, you can click the link below or on the image above to listen. To avoid missing out on future releases, you can join our mailing list HERE

press release
“Polaroid Notes is a German artist named Andreas residing in the countryside between Munich and The Alps and also records as Kraut Sounds. His work as Polaroid Notes has seen releases through our sister labels Tessellate Recordings and most recently, a free netlabel EP called ‘Days Of Our Lives’ on Audio Gourmet. He has also released on Büro für Erdrotation as well as a string of dub-techno geared records as Kraut Sounds on the likes of Terra Rossa, Spiel:feld and Adept Label.

Andreas’ long-standing involvement with music began in the 80s with him performing in bands as well as DJing. His musical journey absorbed 70s Kraut electronica, dub techno and modern Ambient sounds and in Polaroid Notes, he’s settled on a deeply reflective and cinematic sound that plays out like a film score. The work begins with a few simple piano lines before being developed into a soundtrack with analogue and digital equipment, electronics and drone texture.

Against a chilling backdrop of mountains, trees and inspirational landscapes, Andreas’ ambition is to compose a film soundtrack with his piano movements as Polaroid Notes. With every note, Unsung Memories yearns to be the score for an unfilmed movie or TV series, as the matters of dark characters play out across the frames. Each track could represent a single episode or scene. It’s like a journey through deserted and desolate landscapes, cities, hearts and minds, provoking pictures of fate and despair, always with tension. Maybe there is a chance for relief, somewhere, sometimes? But nothing is ever over… ”
